A WHOLE ALPHABET OF WHERE TO HANG WITH YOUR FAM BAM IN BALI!

HOW TO KEEP THE KIDS ENTERTAINED!!

The one big myth that we always assumed, was that Bali was NOT a destination for children. But how wrong we were! EVERYWHERE in Bali is kid friendly...a hard concept to understand coming from Australia. We'd NEVER even contemplate taking our little ones to fancy restaurant or a bar in Oz! Our "lets go for dinner" night out usually is restricted to kid friendly pubs and RSLs and even then so, we worry about how our children are affecting the nearby pensioners trying to eat their mushed up mixed roast and glass of Riesling. Yet, in Bali...no matter the venue, the staff will welcome your ENTIRE family, love on your children, take your baby for a hold while you finish your meal and have a quick chat and a play with the kids. It's a win/win situation for all! Kids are happy=parents are happy too!

If you can manage to pull the kids away from your resort or villa pools, you will find that there is absolutely no shortage of things to do that will not only will keep the kids busy but the grown ups entertained too! Besides visiting the numerous pool and beach clubs  that are awesome for a family day out (that are outlined in each "Where to go" section and often have family friendly days with activities for the kiddies)... you'll be spoilt for choice to decide where you would like to visit as Bali offers LOADS of kid friendly venues that will keep the smiles on your little ones faces till it's bed time!

YOUR A-Z OF WHERE TO GO IN BALI WITH THE RUG RATS!

Here is a complete A-Z of where to go in Bali for a fun family day out!! Compile your lists, book your Nanny and grab a diver to take you to some of the best kiddie attractions in the world!!

ALING-ALING WATERFALL

Discover a hidden waterfall

(Buleleng)

This one is for the adventures and thrill seekers! If you're not much into scaling through the jungle and weaving down uneven stairs and jumping over makeshift bamboo bridges...then don't go chasing waterfalls! Aling-Aling is located about 2.5 hours out of Seminyak, so you'll need to book your private driver and get an early start to the day. It is in the region of Buleleng and definitely worth a visit if you want to find a little hidden gem. Unlike the waterfalls in Ubud, you may be the only adventurers there and will feel like you've literally been lost in paradise! Maybe best to invest in a tour guide from one of the little local stalls as you get closer...they know the area well and will also provide lifejackets for the family to ensure everyone has a safe day!

Once you're there....enjoy multiple cliff jumps into the cool pools below or try your hand at going down the waterfall slide that has been created from the natural flow of the freshwater through the rocks! Film your adventures...don't tell anyone where it is! (Even though I feel like I've let the cat out of the bag!) Tip: ask to be taken to the Secret Garden!

ADRENALINE PARK

Get your heart racing at Adrenaline Park

(Kuta)

If you're into extreme sports and feel like paying someone to slingshot you towards the sun. Want to be pushed off a tower or feel like cheating death. Then come here. You'll find me far away from this bungy jumping, sling shotting small venue. Because I would rather be relaxing by the pool with a cocktail in my hand, but if you'd like to have the thrill of watching your better half get thrown off a tower with nothing else but a rope for all the times he's put his dirty clothes beside the laundry basket instead of in it. Then you'll enjoy this. There is not that much information on where to find this place but seems to be close to the Kuta shopping mall!

ANAK ATELIER PLAYGROUND

Spend an afternoon in a rad playground

(Balangan)

This playground is one of those awesome tactile stimulating, hands on, visually amazing places that you dream of having in your backyard. It's located south of Kuta, in the Ungasan area and this playground is a kiddie wonderland! It is attached to a preschool, so opens at certain times in the afternoons. But if the kids are bouncing off the walls and you're keen to get their jelly beans out then its a great place to retreat to get you through till dinner time. During school holidays you can come during school hours! And if you're lucky enough they may have a family fun day you can attend whilst on holidays in Bali with loads of activities to keep your little ones happy.

AIR TERJUN CINTA

Take a photo in a gigantic birds nest!

(Buleleng)

This is one of those places you want to throw onto your bucket list whilst in Bali. One of those “experiences” that you and yours are going to be talking about long after you’ve returned to reality! It’s a brand new locally run attraction of GIGANTIC birds’ nests suspended from the trees! I can hear you saying….why would I want to travel 2 hours out of Seminyak to North Bali to sit in a birds nest….because it’s awesome! Wait till you see the pictures. The best part of doing a day trip out to the Buleleng area is that you can “kill 2 birds with one stone”. I know that wasn’t punny was it. Not only can you venture through the jungle and see these magical feats of art…they are also surrounded by “The Waterfalls of Love” aaaaawwwww….so you not only get to go chasing waterfalls….(mind you not as grand as the others but no less spectacular)but you also have a BILLION opportunities to take some photos to update your profile pic! And….you’ll be one of the first to discover this new awesome attraction! Don’t forget to Tweet about it! (Couldn’t help throwing in another dad joke!)

AMAZONE ARCADE CENTRE

It's a Balinese Timezone!!!

(Kuta)

If you need something low key to keep the kids entertained and need a wee rest from the sun, then you could spend a couple of hours at Amazone Arcade Centre. Located in the Discovery Shopping Mall in Kuta….it’s basically the equivalent of Timezone yet half the price! If you come as a family….Mums, excuse yourself to go to the bathroom and grab a massage next door while Dad hangs with the kids…say you got lost on the way back *wink*

B.

BALI BUTTERFLY PARK

Visit a butterfly sanctuary

(Tabanan)

I've actually got a real phobia of caterpillars (I know weird). I'm much better these days if I see one of those disgusting hairy yucky life threatening monsters humping its way past me planning my destruction....sooooooo, I don't think I could think of anything worse than spending the day with caterpillars disguised as butterflies (you don't fool me with your bright colours and pretty wings). But, if you're keen to hang out with these winged devils then you can travel about an hour out of Seminyak to get to this insect and butterfly conservation park. You will literally have the opportunity to get in the enclosures and let hundreds of these creatures land on you. Have fun. I'll be in the bar down the road waiting while you enjoy.

BALI BIRD PARK

A park worth "tweeting" about

(Gianyar)

Birds I can handle, and if you'd like to see some absolutely beautiful species then the Bali Bird Park is a great day out. About 45 minutes from Seminyak...you could possibly drop past here on your day trip out to Ubud which is not too much further! The exhibits are all divided into regions from South America to Java and these feathered friends are like watching the mardi gras as they proudly prance around their enclosures boastful of their beauty! You can grab lunch here too and enjoy the array of activities the park offers. Tickets begin from 385,000 idr for adults and 192,000 for children.

BIG GARDEN CORNER

Have lunch in a beautiful garden oasis

(Sanur)

If you're in Sanur and feel like peeling yourself off the white sandy beaches for the sake of needing lunch then you can head here and not lose that sleepy zen sun soaked feeling! The Big Garden Corner is a huge collection of stone sculptures set in amongst tropical gardens! The restaurant offers a mix of Indonesian/Western menu and you can take your pick of the various little area set up to enjoy your dining experience! Great playground to keep the kids entertained, tree houses, garden caves, stone henges and a laneway of brightly coloured umbrellas suspended from the trees (don't forget your camera! Loads of photo ops here!) After you've finished your lunch, then you can recline back to the beach which is only 5 minutes away!

BALINESE CULTURAL CREATION

Learn more about the Balinese culture

(Denpasar)

I like it when we travel with our children for them to experience and learn about the different cultures…see how others do life and to appreciate their differences. Maybe it makes me feel a little bit better about the spoilt brats they can be wading themselves up to the swim up bar and ordering a tropical mocktail and charging it to their room? Balance. This place is the perfect marriage of immersing your privileged little people into the discovery of the Balinese culture…yet done in a completely fun and interactive way! The centre runs classes (booking required) where you can do traditional dance, dress up in Balinese attire, cooking, painting, jewellery making and even learning how to make an offering! This is just the tip of the iceberg of what is on offer…check their website for details and throw the kids in for a day of fun! They’ll come out with a new appreciation for a different culture and you’ll get the satisfaction that you have “broadened their knowledge”. Best part of this venue is that they donate a portion of their earnings to some local charities and temples! How awesome! You can book via www.balineseculturalcreation.com

BALI BOHEMIA

An art lovers lunch beside the pool

(Gianyar)

If you’re a lover of the arts and want you’re wee ones to appreciate the same then head over to the Bali Bohemia restaurant while you’re in Ubud! It’s an arty farty paradise that features local artisans works, paintings and sculptures in their restaurant that is also available for purchase! They want their customers to connect through their love of art and live music that features from traditional style Balinese music and dance to African drumming all set in a relaxed atmosphere with a boho vibe! Look, if you’re just keen for a feed…then this place too is great!! They focus on healthy conscious meals with locally sourced and fresh produce…and if the kids get bored…then they can have a swim in the seriously cool pool while you check out the awesome artisans masterpieces!

BIOLUMINESCENT PLANKTON at Padangbai

Swim in the glittery sea

(Padangbai)

There isn’t too much information on this one….it may be one that if you’re in the area (checking out the chocolate shops) to ask one of the locals that knows someone that knows someone else that could point you in the right direction. It seems to be one of those adventures that you will just have to “wing” and explore, ask and find. But from what I can see, on Padangbai Beach there is an abundance of bioluminescent plankton that at night lights up like twinkle stars in the beach water. Ask a local to take you for a ride on one of their traditional Jukung boats and watch the ocean glitter! Aparently this beach is one of the rare beaches in the world that has an abundance of the plankton and makes for a spectacular fireworks show….in the water! If you find it….let me know how it was! Or…keep it your secret, one of those holiday stories that you keep just between you and the family!!

BIG TREE FARM

Chocolate factory tour!!

(Ubud)

CHOCOLATE!!!!!! This place boasts one of the largest bamboo structures in Bali! An absolute architectural manifestation of magnificence! It seems to be so amazing that CNN did a feature on this amazing venue! But if you don’t care for oversized cubby houses…then you’ll looooove to learn, create and sample the chocolate that is created there! The Big Tree Farms are emotionally invested in their product that incorporates harmony and balance…and my goodness you can taste the love through their delicious chocolate!

BERAWA ART HOUSE

(Canggu)

Loacted in Canggu is this awesome little art studio! Lock your kiddies in for a session, where the team is passionate about art and exploring through different mediums! I love their mission statement that states they want to “seek inspiration, evoke wonder, celebrate and create beauty through art”.  Berawa. You had me at seek! CANYON TUBING

(Payangan)

Float down the river with canyon tubing

Set in amongst the lush rainforest highlands just past Ubud, you can grab a float, strap on your helmet and lifejacket and head down the Siap rivers gentle currents on a jungle adventure! No paddles are needed for this one. It's not white water rafting, but still a great way to get in amongst the nature and enjoy a few fun dips and slides along the way!  Book your canyon tubing adventure through Bali Quad Adventures for a seriously cool day out!

CRUISE THE SEAS ON A PIRATE SHIP

Set sail for dinner on a real life pirate ship!

(Benoa Harbour)

Arrrrrrrr. Do your kids (or you?) like pirates. Have you watched Pirates of the Caribbean too many times? Well I can't promise you'll find Johnny Depp here in Bali (but you never know!) but I can ensure that you will have a blast on a pirate dinner cruise! You'll set sail in the afternoon on your real life pirate ship from Benoa Harbour about 20 minutes out from Seminyak and receive your pirate patch and bandana when you get permission to board! From then while the sunsets, you'll enjoy fire shows, pirate themed games and belly dancing. Stuff your bellies at the buffet and then dance off your gluttony with the live music to finish off the night! You may not find treasure on board, but this cruise is a gold star find!

CASHEW TREE CAFE

A restaurant with an awesome kids play area

(Bingin near Uluwatu)

If you're a surf widow and need some soul food to mend your zen, thinking you were going to enjoy a great family holiday together yet the surf has been so damn good that you have been left to fend for yourself for the majority of the vacation....then head here. It's located about 5 minutes walk from the infamous Bingin Beach break, so you can kick your better half off the scooter as you head on to plant yourself and the kids here for a delicious lunch. The Cashew Tree has a focus on healthy cuisine, beautifully prepared fresh ingredients and  yummy juices and smoothies! The selling point for me is the great big grassed area for the kids to run about and the beach hut filled to the brim with things to keep the smiles on their dials. There's even a boat for them to hang out in and maybe play pretends to sail out to daddy to see how his surf has been and when he's going to come back!! My favourite when I looked up the location of this place....was the great big declaration on Goggle Maps "GREAT COCKTAILS" ok, I'm in!

CHARLY'S CHOCOLATE FACTORY

A Balinese Willy Wonka chocolate factory!

(Candidasa)

Man, I used to dream of being able to visit a chocolate factory when I was young (a long time ago). The scene where the kids come down the stairs and are set free into Charlie's garden made completely of lollies, chocolate and all things sweet I used to rewind over and over whilst lost in a cloud of awe that something could possibly exist!

Well it does.

It may not be the colourful array of delights we watched on Charlie's...but Charly's (with a Y) is still a flipping CHOCOLATE FACTORY!!!!

And I doubt any kid or big kid would turn down the opportunity to spend a day here. It's about a 2 hour drive from Seminyak to the much quieter east coast of Bali. The buildings are quirky teardrop bamboo bungalows and surrounded by coconut trees set right on the beach. Learn how to make chocolate...and get a taste test. There is a VERY limited menu if you'd like to have lunch there which basically is...French fries...oh...and pancakes (of course with chocolate spread!). If you ever get bored tasting chocolate, then your instagram husband can take photos of you swinging over the beach in between coconut palms, while youre trying to get the perfect shot...the kids can have a play on the big pirate shipwreck playground!

CIRCUS WATERPARK

Splash out for the day at Circus Waterpark

(Kuta)

Well….it’s not the famed Waterbom Park….but it is like the annoying younger sibling that wants to be just like its big brother. If you’ve done Waterbom a billion times and just want a change of scenery and a day out to entertain the kids, then Circus will meet all of your needs. Cheaper entry than its big brother, and less rides…but with that comes less crowds…and with that comes smaller line ups! Throw it into your calendar for a great day out and a whole heap of fun!!!! Plan out which ride you’ll hit first via www.circuswaterpark.com

DOG ADOPTION REHABILITATION CENTRE

Help out at a doggie at a rehab centre

(Ubud)

When you come for holidays, you’re going to see that the Balinese street doggies are a part of the everyday scenery. They the live the life, roam the streets, run and dig holes in the beach sand, get fed at the various restaurants and by tourists and sleep away their full bellies under the shade of palm trees! Yet, sometimes they need some extra TLC besides the passing pat from a vacationer! The Bali Dog Adoption and Rehabilitation Centre (BARC…that’s punny!) dedicates their every day to ensure that these street dogs are well cared for if they’ve been hurt or need some medical assistance. They have a “no kill” policy which means they rehabilitate our furry friends in their centre and ensure that they will either find a home or safe again out on the streets. They have also initiated a sterilisation program to cull the amount of homeless doggies that roam in Bali. This is one of the first of its kind and truly a beautiful charity to visit if you are in the Ubud area! So if you’re passionate about your furry friends and would like to pop past to help….you will be welcomed with open arms. You can contact them or donate to their worthy cause via www.barc4balidogs.org.au

It is a 3D gallery of murals painted to create the illusion that you are literally falling off a cliff, diving into sharks or balancing over a canyon! It’ll guarantee you and yours some harmless fun (even though it’ll look like you’ve just climbed the pyramids in Egypt) while you snap away some photos to send to your family and friends! There are over 100 artworks to discover over 3 levels and with entry being about $10pp then you’ve got some change in your pocket for a big cocktail after! ELEPHANT PARK

Get friendly with these gentle giants

(Ubud)
I swore I would never do an elephant related activity again after seeing a documentary on how some that have been placed into captivity and being treated horribly….so I read up long and hard on this place before I decided to promote it! And they seem legit…committed to the conservation and care of these most magnificent creatures! And the money you pay for entry goes directly back into maintaining enclosures and ensuring they are very well looked after! You can go for a visit, give them a bath or just simply tour around and meet these gentle giants! For those keen to feel like youre literally on safari, then you can stay the night in their lodging and have them almost greet you at your front door! Located at The Dynasty Resort in Kuta, they will learn to tumble, jump and fly through the air (all with a harness so they don’t fall from their nests!!) maybe more like a circus clown, rather than a gliding acrobat but regardless it will be a fun day out that will leave you “flying high”. While you’re there….you too can organise to have a turn on the other range of water activities they offer such as banana boat rides, fishing charters, jet skis or parasailing! KERAMAS AERO PARK

Have a first class dinner in a plane

(Gianyar)

Do you always hear off friends or friends of friends that scenario of when they check into their flight at the airport that they’ve been told they’ve been upgraded to business or first class?? How does that happen!!! Why hasn’t that ever happened to me. Although I’ve never had a bad experience in the cattle class….I’ve always wondered what goes on behind those closed curtains, the subtle hints of Moet being poured when you board and walk through, sitting in their recliner lounge chairs and chef prepared meals! Well, if you’re like me and have never been given the opportunity to see whats on the other side of those curtains (that pretty much is a punch in the face to say….you’re not worthy enough to be in here) then you can pretend to be a “fancy pants” for the day at Keramas. This restaurant and bar is created in a transformed Boeing 737 suspended high above lush rice paddies!! You can enjoy an in-flight meal in the plane and be treated like a first class passenger, grab a drink from the bar below while the kids join in the activities in the playground! To book your first class tickets visit the website on www.keramasaeropark.com

KEMENUH BUTTERFLY PARK

MERMAID TAILS AT PUTRI SIREN

Be a real life mermaid for the day

(Sanur)

I always dreamt of being a mermaid growing up (*cough* still do)! I was one of those kids that you couldn’t get out of the pool or ocean and would spend endless hours swimming and pretending I was a mermaid! I’ve always proclaimed that Aerial is my favourite Disney princess….forgoing the big ball gowns that Cinderella and Belle had and instead dreamed of having a mermaid tail that glistened with rainbow colours and a tiara made out of shells! If I had discovered this shop in Sanur when younger (actually pretty stoked to find it in adulthood too) then I would’ve been in heaven! It is a store that is dedicated to turning your little mermaids and merman’s dreams into reality selling handcrafted mermaid tails and all things related to make you feel like you really have been lost in King Neptunes underwater kingdom! If you don’t feel like forking out your dosh for a tail, you can rent them for the day through the store, they also have frequent mermaid playdates or events at the public pools that you can attend and be a mermaid for the day! If your “Little Mermaids” birthday happens to fall whilst you are in Bali….then Putri Siren can organise a mermaid party at your villa! I love most that they are focused on protecting the Balinese beaches by crafting mermaid bracelets and other jewellery from the debris found in the ocean with proceeds going towards beach cleaning projects! They will be entertained with these furry creatures in a small garden setting while you can enjoy some lunch or a coffee and MAYBE even have an uninterrupted conversation with your partner!! The Maha Restaurant is located almost next door to the Sacred Monkey Forest entry….well worth for at least a cold drink after climbing through the jungle!

MONKEY FOREST

Take your little monkeys to visit the monkeys

(Ubud)

Well it goes without saying that visiting the Sacred Monkey Forest is definitely a “must do” when you are in the Ubud area!! It is relatively cheap entry, around $5 and the forest is literally abundant with monkeys from little babies to king kongs! You can feed the monkeys at the various little banana outlet stalls located around the forest for a small penny and have the monkeys sit on your shoulders while you have your photo taken! A part from the kids getting to hang with the monkeys all day, my better half and I absolutely loved the lush tropical jungle setting it’s located in! Meandering paths take you over sculpted bridges, statues and streams…it’s really beautiful! We sat at their outdoor amphitheatre for a bit and simply enjoyed watching all of the monkeys antics….it definitely is one place you can let your little ones “monkey around” (sorry for the dad joke) check out their website for further info via www.monkeyforestubud.com

You’ll find a vendor on most beaches, some rad dude dedicating his life work to delivering what I think may be one of the best things I’ve ever eaten in my life! For around $1, he’ll throw a fresh corn cob onto the charcoal grill on his beach cart, smother it in buttery, garlicky goodness till its dripping in flavour and then all you have to do is plonk yourself down in the sand with the kiddies and watch the waves roll in….always best paired with a spectacular sunset!!

From the death defying drops to a seriously cool kids pool, the WHOLE family is going to enjoy their day here!!! If you bring your nanny along, you and your partner may be able to escape for a few minutes to try out some of the thrill seekers rides, line ups are never too long and a lot of the bigger rides, our 4 and 6 year olds at the time were able to come on with us….they laughed as they shot down steep tunnels, I screamed in sheer terror, they laughed again at me when they saw the photos of me eyes tightly closed, mouth open, tongue hanging out, white knuckled holding onto the floaty inflatable thing I was riding on as if it were my life raft all with a natural face lift from the speed we were getting on some of the dips. Waterbom boasts that it is the number 1 waterpark in Asia….and I can see why. It’s an absolute water wonderland!! Book your tickets online….or just show up and have fun!!!!! www.waterbom-bali.com

BALI ZOO

Zootopia in Bali

(Gianyar)

For some reason I actually find it a teeny weeny bit heartbreaking visiting the zoo….seeing all the animals in their enclosures….but then I have to understand that they’re well looked after and maybe living in an endless dream holiday of food, water and a pretty cool home. So when I looked up the Bali Zoo, hesitant that the animals maybe weren’t being treated well the first words that flash across their web page is Love. Conserve. Share. Yes, I do believe Bali Zoo does this from the little bit of background research I did….so I can feel comfortable with sharing this venue with you! This place will rival Taronga Park Zoo….has it all! Lions, tigers, elephants, alligators and monkeys (besides the little ones you came with). You can dine in the restaurant for lunch next to an elephant and after head to the small kids pool for a swim. Grab your tickets now via www.bali-zoo.com

So, there you have it! Hopefully my A to Z may help you on your adventuring through this Salty Surga! Have fun exploring. Enjoy all the squeals of delight!! I will add new kiddie adventures to the alphabet when I hear of them! xx
